Portfolio

I've managed to choose, photograph, scan and edit 18 pages of my 20. I still need to photograph some 3-d decorated skulls I've done but they are in Southampton and I've been in Woking for a week or so, and a photo of my fmp book once completed. So here are the 18 pages I've chosen, they may change as I will talk to my tutors to see what they think. And I haven't decided what order to put them in either. My portfolio case has been ordered and is on its way. I have also managed to design my business cards and some postcards for the degree show.

I need to edit this a bit to make the
background less busy

This is the first time I've seen all the pages placed together and I'm really happy with the collection of work as a whole.

Here are my postcard and business card designs

Creating my 'Hullabaloo' image

I started my image by deciding what I wanted to include in my image. I then created a very rough sketch of the layout. After I was happy with the layout, I started penciling the images using my photos as references. Once I was happy with the sketches, I made the final images I was going to scan in using a mixture of fine line drawings and lino cut prints. Here are some photos of the sketches and images I scanned in.

The quick layout sketch
Using the rough layout I decided the size of each seperate image and did a rough sketch. If I felt it would be too difficult to draw actual size, I either made it twice the size or one and a half the size.

Using the window as a make shift light box I fine lined the drawing, adding detail and tidying them up as I went.
lino prints, only had a dark purple ink but just scanned them in black and white with a high contrast so I didnt lose any detail.

Once scanned in I coloured each image separately, and then copied it into the final document and slowly built the image up. So here it is...

To colour it, I checked the guidelines on the newspaperclub website, they had swatches you could download to photoshop. They are the colours which work best for newspaper print. It made it quite easy to colour as I only had 20 to choose from.
I'm really happy with the outcome. It's as colourful and busy as I wanted it to be. I have sent it off to my tutors and have asked them to comment if they feel something could be done to improve it. Fingers crossed there's not much! As still have a lot of things to do before the end of my degree!!

Lets go down to the pier today... (hullabaloo catalogue)

Well the first thing I have to say is how amazing it was to have a day off and have some fun!! Spent the entire day at Brighton, on the beach and pier. I haven't been since I was 13 (8 years ago!) and it made me feel like a kid again. Thoroughly enjoyed every second, the colours, the rides, the noise, the excitement, the ice cream, fish and chips EVERYTHING!! After I have finished uni, I am definitely going for a longer visit to experience more than just the beach and pier. Here are some photos I am going to use for references to create my image.

the old pier (burnt down) won't be using this, but thought it was interesting

whats a pier without an arcade?

The entrance!
Went with a friend I've known for years, made the day a great laugh! Won't be using this but you can't not have your photo taken in AT LEAST one of these!
can't play those games without change
arcade
I like the text and colours of this sign...
Loved the luminous lighting
Hook a Duck - oldest game in the book?
Not really into the whole 'fortune telling' thing, but loved the carriage.
Candy store - Of course!! - good text.
Everywhere was so full and busy, want to make sure I capture that in my image!
no funfair without a carousel.
SO MUCH FUN
The most decorative ride of all.
HELTER SKELTER
For two 21 year olds... we didn't manage the dark too well... (haunted house)
One of thousands of Seagulls
Bumper cars - a bit too aggressive for us! but definitely illustrating them...
I think we visited this machine one too many times... as i'm sure most others do!
Fish and Chips
YUM.
So many things on one platform!
The Brighton Lobster

I can never manage to finish it before it starts to melt - delicious.
My plan is to create several fine liner drawings and lino cuts to scan into the computer and collage together. I will then colour them digitally.

I want the image to be really busy and colourful and to remind me of the excitement I felt.
